Imam Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari (d. 870 CE / 256 AH) compiled Sahih al-Bukhari, regarded as the most authentic hadith collection in Sunni Islam. He traveled extensively across the Muslim world, collecting narrations from thousands of scholars. His methodology was rigorous: he only included hadith where the chain of transmission (isnad) was unbroken, narrators were trustworthy, and the text (matn) was free from contradictions. The collection contains around 7,275 hadith (with repetitions), covering theology, law, ethics, and daily life. It is divided into books and chapters, such as Kitab al-Iman (Book of Faith), Kitab al-Salat (Book of Prayer), and Kitab al-Buyu (Book of Trade). Scholars often consider it second only to the Qur’an in authority. Its influence extends beyond jurisprudence, shaping Islamic thought, spirituality, and culture. In seminaries, Sahih al-Bukhari is studied in depth, with commentaries like Fath al-Bari by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani providing scholarly insights.
